Zombicide Invader - Preacher Karl

Preacher Karl appears to be a homage to Judge Dredd.  Karl is set up to be a tank with starting 6 AP.  

Generally, I don't prefer the 6 AP starting skill just because I like to avoid damage all together and if characters start taking damage, things are generally not going according to plan.  That being said, 6 armor can definitely save an otherwise end-of-game event caused by an unexpected abomination rush.  Aside from that, Karl has a lot of ranged-oriented skills including the ability to charge into combat and not be a danger to his friends thanks to the Point Blank option at Red.

Zombicide Invader - Ix-nix-zik

 

Ix-nix-zik is likely a homage to a District 9 Prawn.  This one was definitely an interesting change-up from the primarily humanoid characters that make up the vast majority of figures.  

Free search at Blue seems a bit weak and something more 'alien' could have been more interesting.  Ix is a fairly good choice to speed run missions as getting some free initial searches and then an extra move action at Orange are helpful in that type of build.

Zombicide Invader - Richard Kindred

 

Richard has a skill set oriented towards shooting things in an up-and-personal way.  Point Blank is a nice skill to have, especially if Xenomoths are fluttering around.  Adding on the "+1 to Dice Roll: Ranged" builds on the skill and eventually a free ranged action or potentially the more powerful BIA free combat action.

Richard is the third and last of the Bladerunner homages in Invader by honoring the star of the show - Rick Deckard played by the well-known actor Harrison Ford.

The Blade Runner trio will be fun to run together in various missions.

Zombicide Invader - Katie

Taunt at Blue can be useful, but overall, Katie's skill set is unfortunately not overly exciting.  The model is neat looking, not cluttered by a ton of gear, and was fun to paint.

I never really got into Battlestar Galactica so I wouldn't have recognized Katie to be an homage to Kara "Starbuck" Thrace.  Searching for her in Google brings up a photo of basically what the character is wearing and the general physical features match up pretty well to make a fairly solid match.

Zombicide Invader - Dr. Whutt

Dr. Whutt has Remote Control: Sentry Gun as a blue skill which generally is not the most useful skill.  He also has the ability to control the bot at orange which is generally a much more useful skill.  He does have the option for an additional general action or Xeno Link which are actually useful with his remote control skills.

Following Morty, Dr. Whutt is an homage to Back to the Future's Dr. Emmett Brown.  The face and hair alone mirror that of the good doctor.  I'm not exactly sure how the 'Doctor Octopus' machinery on his back applies to this homage, but as with many characters released by CMON several personalities are covered in a single character.

Zombicide Invader - Morty McCallister

Morty has skills that lend well to a highly mobile ranged character build.  Skills such as Lucky and Roll 6: +1 Die Combat make him more of a 'luck-based' character rather than a solid combat or speedster build, but maybe fun to use on occasion.  

Given the walkman, physical similarity, play on the name, and pairing with 'Dr Whutt', Morty is pretty clearly an homage to Back to the Future's Marty McFly.

Zombicide Invader - Carlota

Carlota was very fun to paint as the sculpt is nicely detailed and just an interesting pose.  The Brown Madder used in parts of the pre-glaze really sped up the painitng process.  This is the first model I used Liquin on to combat the slow drying experienced with the oil paints.  I believe it helped, or at least didn't hurt, as this was the first model since I discovered the problems that cured in a reasonable amount of time.

Gameplay, the Escalation Ranged at blue is a really powerful skill and Carlota can become may be the most effective ranged character in the game with a free Ranged action at orange followed by +1 to dice roll at Red.

Carlota joins Vivian, from the core set, as another homage to a character in the Aliens movie - Vasquez.
