The Witcher: Old World - Fiend

This three-eyed relation to the elk was a fun-to-paint miniature.

Some of these photos were posted to Facebook in a thread discussing oils and if beginners to the hobby should consider them or if the oils are better suited for painters with previous acrylic experience.  While there is certainly some things to learn before jumping into oils (or any other hobby/technique), I believe oils are well suited to any level of hobbyist from novice to expert.

For this figure, I decided to take photos of the various steps of the oil process I am learning from James Wappel.  Hopefully, the simple steps listed here spark enough interest to check out James' YouTube or Twitch streams.  He also has a Patreon with additional tutorials focused on oil painting miniatures.  I highly recommend watching a few videos and considering trying out oil paints.  It really changed the hobby for me making the whole miniature painting process more enjoyable and relaxing.

Step 1: Preglaze
Step 2: Wipe away pre-glaze with makeup sponges
Step 3: Add highlights
Usually, Step 3 is to 'drybrush' the highlights, but in this case, the preglaze color is the same as I wanted the basic color to be.  I added in some more dark tones after/during the highlights.

The Witcher: Old World - Toad

The Toad is a neat, but terrifying-looking beast.  Toads shouldn't have teeth...or an extra set of little dangling front legs.  The oil paints really proved useful on this one.  Most of this model was painted in an hour.  I looked at the clock after feeling fairly pleased with the results and was very surprised that it had only been an hour - I was still having a lot of fun with it so I added some more highlights and worked on the mouth a bit more before calling it done in under two hours.

I had used the Gamblin Green Gold oil paint before as the primary color of the strip of clothing on Zombicide Invader's Commander Morton and wasn't overly impressed with it.  Although it looked fine and kind of matched the game art color, it was just kind of a strange color to apply and use.  However, used to blend with Perylene Black (very dark green) and Asphaultum (dark reddish brown), it really is spectacular!  It brings a very rich greenish-yellow hue to what it is mixed with.  It can be most noticed around the midsection of the Toad and on the tops of the 'warts'.  I had a discount code to use which brought the price down a bit, but it was still kind of stupid expensive for a tube of it, but it really turned out to be excellent in this case.  I'm curious if Indian Yellow would have done something similar, but I've only got one Toad.

I've given a shout-out to James Wappel before, but once again, I thank him for completely revitalizing the art of miniature painting for me.  The oil paints and techniques he uses are very much a delight to use.

The Witcher: Old World - School of the Viper

The Viper school Witcher painted up very well and the quality sculpt helped with that.

A nice little Epic Basing Alocasia Odura plant added some nice flavor to the ruins this Witcher is perched upon.

The Witcher: Old World - School of the Cat

It doesn't get much more dynamic than the pose of this model.  Jumping off a rock to hack into a beast is a very neat idea and was well executed.  Painting this model went smoothly thanks to the detailed model.

A nice Epic Basing Monstera plant added some nice ground cover and some additional vertical action on the base.  This type of plant is one of my favorite jungle plants due to the nice character it has.

The Witcher: Old World - Koshchey

Well, it is one big spider-ish thing...with 10 legs if you count the front appendages.  The legs left some nice space to fit in some Epic Basing Alocasia Odora Plants as well as a small Monstera Plant.  Both of these add some nice color and additional interest to this otherwise somewhat limited color on this model.

The Witcher: Old World - Glustyworp

The Glustyworp painted up fairly well, although I feel like I could have done more with it.  The shell is a fairly large canvas that some neat blends could have been neat.

I was able to squeeze in an Epic Basing Cattail, but had to go with the model's left side even though it would have looked better on the right to allow the model to fit back in the box.
